Art San Diego 2011 Spotlight Artists Announced

San Diego, Calif. (June 15, 2011) ART SAN DIEGO is delighted to announce this year’s Spotlight Artists who will each be creating a site-specific solo exhibition at the fair in September.   Spotlight Artists are selected by Curatorial Director Marcela Quiroz Luna.  She states, "This year I have selected to Spotlight an all-Latin-American array of strong vision artists from Brazil and Mexico–including for the first time–ART SAN DIEGO’s “LaunchPad” program, featuring two young and promising artists working in Tijuana.  All male artists (none over 40 years old), working in various media, from painting, photography, drawing, sound and mixed media installations, collage and hand-cut paper pieces, their works convey a powerful presence–conceptuall y and formally; yet, they also share an inherent aesthetic delicacy that subtly urges us to reflect on the intricate relations, antagonistic forces and fragile conditions that construct our everyday life.”

ART SAN DIEGO 2011 Spotlight Artists Include: HUGO LUGO represented by Ginnochio Gallery, MX;  RAMSÉS R. OLAYA represented by EDS Galería, DANIEL RUANOVA represented by ECOH, MX; TUCA VIEIRA represented by 1500 Gallery, NY and introducing LAUNCHPAD: Spotlight Artists: CÉSAR VÁZQUEZ | JONATHAN RUIZ DE LA PEÑA, Nodo Galería (TJ, MX)

ART SAN DIEGO has become a marketplace for the world’s leading contemporary galleries, and a creative space for artistic exhibitions.  Over the last two years of the fair, collectors have shown a strong appetite for works from Latin American artists which strengthens the original vision to become a leading bi-national fair in this region.  “ART SAN DIEGO is an important platform for launching emerging talents in the contemporary art scene; firmly assuming the mission to offer its artists the opportunity to access the international terrain and gain recognition.” Paola Contreras, Assistant Director, GINOCCHIO GALLERY.

“The decision of targeting ART SAN DIEGO as an-over-the-border event renders it as a valuable opportunity for both cities–Tijuana and San Diego–enabling them the possibility to recognize and legitimize each other through their artists in a positive way. I think this will be a determinant factor in the near future that will distinguish ART SAN DIEGO from other fairs in the International contemporary art scene.” Hugo Lugo, 2011 Spotlight Artist.

In addition ART SAN DIEGO 2011 will feature the following exhibition:  NAFTA: North American Furniture - Towards an Artform | Design Spanning 2 Borders and 3 Countries. This exhibition will showcase four Contemporary Designers from Mexico, Canada, and the US; all exploring the borders between furniture, art and utility.

Over Labor Day Weekend San Diego will be home to the third edition of ART SAN DIEGO Contemporary Art Fair. More than 60 leading galleries from the USA, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Asia will be taking part presenting first class art and an interactive art experience in a setting that is sophisticated and contemporary, with sweeping views of the San Diego Bay. The fair size is intimate and our programming offers a great diversity of art viewing, talks, films, culinary events and music and dance performances. In addition to the programming and fair experience ART SAN DIEGO serves to provide an additional focus on the cultural life of San Diego. We work collaboratively with city-wide arts organizations and artists to create a dynamic visitor experience during the fair.

Well, that really moves the eye around the page. Every color in the wheel was used somewhere here and yet with the black/white/grey it keeps them separated enough to not look gaudy. Gradation of shades give it perspective in some places and layers in others. The obscured words and numbers keep me looking for more. Very dynamic work.
